I wrote to Senator Figueroa of Health and Human Resources. After some research I learned Medicaid does not cover the cost of abortions. This is an issue as very little people on Medicaid have the funds to care for a child. And sometimes they just don’t want one at that moment or ever. However, the current Virginia Code state that Medicaid will only cover the cost of an abortion if it is a product of rape or incest, or have a physical/mental disability. As stated in my email, survivors of rape often do not report it to law enforcement for fear of being blamed and/or not believed. Many of them do not have the income to go through the trial process and find it necessary to stay quiet. Furthermore, essentially forcing someone to have the baby does not set up that child for a nurturing life. I suggested that this code be expanded to include all those under Medicaid.
My table group and I attended the Chocolate Walk hosted by the Collins Center. The walk raised funds that go towards the Collins Center which in turn supports survivors of sexual assault. We chose to attend this event because of its direct support for survivors. When we arrived, we picked up the boxes that would collect our sweets as we explored downtown. The six of us stopped by the sites listed on the box. Establishments provided us with brownies, cookies, chocolate pecans, and many more desserts they had prepared. Our contribution allowed me to connect with those that work at the Collins Center and understand the importance of their work. Furthermore, I hope to work alongside the Collins Center for my senior capstone. An alarming amount of women and children are affected by sexual violence.
I often repost political posts on my Instagram story. For my engagement portfolio I focused on the recent event surrounding the US men’s hockey team. After the 2-1 win over Canada in the 2026 Olympic games, the US men’s hockey team is seen on a call with President Trump. A snarky and sexist remark is made by Trump stating that he’d probably be impeached if he didn’t also invite the US women’s hockey team. Obviously blatant sexism, the men laughed in agreement and have yet to publicly apologize, (though it’s stated they have sent a private apology). Hilary Knight, captain of the Olympic gold medalist women’s hockey team, stated in an interview, “It’s a great teaching point to really shine light on how women should be championed for their amazing feats. And now I have to sit in front of you and explain someone else’s behavior. It’s not my responsibility.” It is also important to state the US women’s hockey teams victory at the 2026 Olympic Winter Games. Since 1998, they have medaled in every Olympics with their most recent gold in 2018. On the other hand, the men hadn’t medaled since 2010 when they received silver. Before 2026, their most recent gold medal in ice hockey was 1980, 46 years ago. Furthermore, 63.6% of Team USA’s medals were won by women. Eight of the twelve golds were also won by women. It is evident that the women were instrumental in team USA’s Olympic success. And yet their achievements have been overshadowed by the men’s blatant ignorance. I received likes by those who agreed and this topic has come up in conversation with my friends and family who have a similar outlook.
I created a mental health support flyer for those who may not know where to find resources. As I have struggled with my mental health, it is important to me that I spread awareness for those in need of support. At the top I included the suicide and crisis hotline. As a subscript, I noted that the number is available to text or call. This is especially helpful for those who are anxious to call. Furthermore, women are at high risk of domestic violence. Because of their heightened vulnerability, the National Domestic Violence Hotline was necessary to highlight. Anonymous resources were also included as many do not feel comfortable reaching out if their identity is known. Doing so eliminates the perceived stigma one may have regarding others beliefs about them. Those in need of support are less likely to seek it out if they feel judged by those around them. Another resource provided via link are support groups. Many times those struggling need to converse with those experiencing similar struggles. Doing so shows them that they’re not alone. Lastly, I linked the website that can help people in need of essential help. There are resources for so much, but people can begin to think they’re alone if these resources are unknown to them.
